The beginning of a new era- that reflected the fragmented state of the society during and after the World War I. There is a dramatic shift in the style of architecture. They started to embrace sleek-sharp edged appearance with distinctive decorative details that represented an exotic new look for the buildings. This was greatly influenced by the Industrial revolution, with the development of new materials like steel and concrete; including other societal aspects that led to the emergence of new opportunities in a typology that never existed before.

We shall look into the works of two great architects of that era to find out how architecture was influenced and how that influences the world that we live in.

-Otto Wagner-

Austrian Architect, Teacher

ree

He began his career following revivalism, incorporating new versions of historical styles, and then went on to write his book-'modern architecture', where he advocated a certain kind of architecture.

Karlsplatz Station- defined by simple geometric forms enhanced by decorative elements.

ree

Majolikahaus- An art form called Majolika, where they made use of patterns on tiles all over the structure. [art novou] patterns derived from nature.

ree

Sankt Leopold Church - This structure moves away from the typical idea of what a church would look like around 1900s. Though the structure promotes ornamentation, it seems very geometric and abstract in nature.

ree

Postal Savings Bank- A very modern version from his previous structures, though its facade is ornamented, it serves as a function; apart from the statues that are represented.

ree

-Adolf Loos-

well known for controversial essays

ree

Looshaus [1911]

The building was said to be so controversial because of the blunt plain-ness of the façade and the people found it ugly so much so that the emperor of Vienna stopped making his way to the palace from the route that this structure was built in so that he would avoid seeing it.

This structure marked the beginning of the structures we live amongst now and it created a certain shift in the perspective of aesthetically pleasing structures.

ree

Villa Müller, 1930, Prague, Czech Republic

Very modern in terms of its simplicity and proportional in geometry and has a distinct contrast between the exterior and interior aesthetic.

Since these structures seem to have marked the beginning of this new era, it is safe to say that the perspective reality that we live in affects the likeability of an aesthetic..

What might seem ugly for us right now in the present would be something we would awe tomorrow. On the side note, architecture has definitely paved a road for us to aspire and awe for the little things life manifests in our mortal lifetimes. Keep tweaking it to your liking and you'll be guided to the next revelation.
